Homily for the Fifth Sunday of Lent, Confirmation: March 29, 2009

Given by the Most Reverend Stephen E. Blaire at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Stockton.

I would suggest that all of us here might have the same desire as the Greeks in John’s Gospel. “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.”

The response of Jesus to the disciples is also directed at us. Jesus tells us that He is the grain of wheat that must die so that it can produce much fruit. And that if your serve Christ you must follow him in the same way.

If you want to see Jesus, you need to see Him in his death and resurrection. Being raised up on the cross, He draws everyone to Himself. If you believe in Him and obey Him you will come to eternal life. If you wish to serve Jesus this means you follow him by keeping his commandments, and in your bodies living for God.

Today you are receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Holy Spirit is given as a gift to you by God so that you will have the strength and wisdom to follow Jesus Christ. We can easily be distracted by the pleasures of this world to such a degree that we do not even think about the importance of God in our lives. Even more seriously, because of our human weakness we can easily sin, doing that which does not please God, and can hurt ourselves or others.

We need strength to be faithful in following Christ. We need strength to live for God. We need strength to do what is right and just and good. The Holy Spirit comes in Confirmation to give us that strength, along with the courage to act on this gift. Furthermore the Holy Spirit gives us the gift of wisdom so that we will know in our minds and hearts what is pleasing to God.

As you come forward to be anointed with the consecrated oil of Chrism you will be filled with the Holy Spirit in a full and powerful way. Come forward then with a firm decision that from here on out you will live each and every day as a good Catholic, strong in your faith.
